The Catalyst Program


The Catalyst Program is an intensive, campus-based mental health treatment program for youth (ages 11-17) and their families.

Youth referred to the program present with co-morbid mental health concerns, histories of trauma and maltreatment, pre-natal alcohol exposure, and significant cognitive and developmental impact. The average length of stay in the program is 6-12 months. The program provides a trauma-sensitive/trauma-informed and neuro-developmental approach to treatment, and utilizes cognitive behavioural therapy strategies.

The top five presenting concerns for youth and families using the Catalyst Program in 2015 were:

  1. Behavioural issues
  2. Identified mental health concern
  3. Anger management
  4. Abuse/violence issues
  5. Running away

The top mental health diagnoses in 2015 were:

  1. Neuro-developmental disorder
  2. Disruptive and impulse control disorders
  3. Conduct disorder


The Catalyst Program provides:

  • 24-hour supervision and milieu treatment
  • 24-hour crisis support for children on-site and their families in the community
  • Individual and family therapeutic services specifically tailored to the needs of the child and family
  • A comprehensive functional assessment
  • Access to additional therapeutic and assessment services including occupational therapy, expressive arts therapies, speech and language therapy, etc. (at an additional cost)
  • Access to Wood’s Homes Multi-Sensory Room
  • Nursing services and monitoring of health issues
  • Access to psychiatric care, and medication management and review
  • Access to specialized on-site educational services
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
  • Post-treatment community care and follow-up services
