From all of us at Wood's Homes, have a safe and festive holiday season.

The Santa Project: Bringing cheer to our families

This season can be challenging for the children and families we serve — and for those who are already struggling, the added stress can be especially difficult.

Our Santa Project helps ease the financial pressures for parents and caregivers around the holidays. Staff let us know which children and families could most benefit from some help and a list is created based on needs and wants.

This year, more than 300 people were registered, and thanks to the generosity of our community, comfort and joy found their way to each and every one of them.

Packages wrapped, gifts delivered, needs fulfilled, wishes granted and children and families have their hopes restored.

Parents and Caregivers: Take care of yourselves!

As parents, the roles we play in the lives of our children can sometimes overshadow our own need for self-care. Hey, it’s normal, we want them to succeed. But it can be easy to invest so much in their lives — school, work, sports, etc. — that we forget about our own.

Our Community Resource Team is comprised of experts who help parents/caregivers deal with feelings of unbalance. Follow the link below for 10 self-care tips. You deserve a break today!

Our clients appreciate One Warm Coat & Toasty Toes

To the people and organizations who have donated backpacks filled with toiletries, mittens, toques and warm clothes, THANK YOU! We are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such a generous community.

And we can’t stop there — as part of the One Warm Coat campaign, Brooks Brothers and Eddie Bauer in Calgary asked their patrons for gently used coats to help our clients in need this holiday season. These donations mean the world to youth in our Linking Employment, Abilities and Development program (LEAD) who require appropriate clothing for job interviews and work placements, as well as homeless youth who use our Street Services programs.

We send a big thanks to the Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors for their annual Toasty Toes Sock Drive. Hundreds of pairs of socks arrived at our office and were quickly distributed among the children and families we serve. Read on for ways you can help the youth and families of Wood's Homes.

Santa visits our hard working Board members

Wood's Homes could not do what we do without the support we receive from our amazing Board members. To thank them for another fantastic year, we hosted our annual Christmas Board Social in late November on our Parkdale campus. There was great food, great laughs, holiday cheer and even an appearance by Santa Claus himself!

Celebrating staff, a big deal at Wood's Homes

Did you know that Wood’s Homes has hosted an annual Service Recognition event for more than 25 years?

We thought you might like to take a peek at this year’s festivities. With more than 500 staff and volunteers working throughout Alberta and in the Northwest Territories, it’s not easy to get everyone together in one room. But on Nov. 27, staff, volunteers and guests shared an evening that celebrates long service and accomplishments over the year. And in a true showing of the great team we've built at Wood's Homes, staff nominate each other.

The night featured heart-warming speeches, a great dinner, a major silent auction (with proceeds going to children and families) and best of all some great dancing! For a look at the good work of Wood's Homes staff, follow the link below.

Wood's Homes plays host to experts from across the globe

Wood’s Homes launched a unique counselling service in 1990 to better meet the needs of Calgarians struggling with their mental health. The service differed from others because it was no-charge, immediately accessible and based on a single-session, walk-in therapeutic model. We were the first in Canada to offer this service, and it has since been replicated by mental health organizations across the country.

As part of this 25th anniversary year, we staged an international symposium in Banff in September, with participants from several countries attending to share and learn from each other. We are proud to provide this counselling service at Eastside Family Centre (in Calgary’s northeast). Read more for a first hand look at the symposium and more on Eastside.

Bright Futures: Wood’s Homes partnerships provide opportunity for youth

Wood’s Homes could not do what we do without our many corporate partnerships. These are companies and organizations that step forward to help us in our work with vulnerable young people.

Among these amazing partners is Starbucks, which has been instrumental in supporting our LEAD program (Linking Employment, Abilities and Development) while also volunteering at Wood's Homes events and fundraisers. Currently Starbucks is accepting donations on our behalf at a number of its Calgary locations! As well, our Youth Culinary Arts Program (YCAP) continues to flourish with support from Safeway, and Virgin Unite's RE*Generation campaign. Read on for how Virgin describes our partnership, and meet Rob and Josh who have found brighter futures!
