Welcome to Wood's Homes . . .

Thank you for your visit.

We are a chlidren's mental health treatment centre based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We provide 30 programs and services for troubled children, youth and their families. We have been doing that since 1914, and remain one of the oldest, still-operating charities in Alberta.

Wood's Homes is recognized in the community and across Canada, for its   innovative services. We are a place of trust, where all troubled young people and their families (regardless of the difficulty) can turn to for help.

We Never Say No

We Never Give Up

We Never Turn Anyone Away

We are most proud of  . . .

Our Vision:

Locally and nationally known and respected as a centre of excellence for child and family treatment, research and training, a workplace of choice and a leader in the development of innovative service choices.

Our Mission:

To promote and assist the development and  well-being of children, youth and families within their community.

At Wood's Homes, we strongly believe that families are the backbone of a community. When families are in trouble, children suffer. Helping young people reach adulthood, achieve their potential and become productive members of the community must be one of society’s top priorities!

Wood’s Homes has been around for a very long time - we are looking forward to celebrating our 100th anniversary in 2014.

We are a nationally accredited, not-for-profit organization that offers programs and services in Calgary, Strathmore (Wheatland County); Canmore (Bow Valley); Lethbridge, Fort McMurray and Fort Smith, N.W.T.

Wood's Christian Homes (as it was known up until 2007) began as an orphanage in 1914.  A soldier, about to head overseas, stopped Rev. George Wood on a street in Innisfail, Alberta, to ask if we would consider caring for his two motherless children. Sadly, the soldier did not return but that pivotal moment became the foundation for what today has become a social service agency that serves 10,000 troubled children and their families every year.

Our core residential programs are located on two campuses in Calgary - the Tuer Children's Mental Health Centre in Parkdale; the other in Bowness on the same grounds purchased by Rev. George Wood back in 1926.

With a staff complement of 350 and growing, we currently provide 30 programs and services that are divided into the following categories:

  • Intensive residential treatment

  • In-home support and crisis services

  • Community outreach

  • No-fee, walk-in counselling

  • Youth in Transition services

  • Specialized Learning Centres

  • Regional and rural programs

Our key services include:

- 8 residential treatment programs - in 4 cottages on each of our 2 Calgary campuses

- EXIT Youth Shelter and EXIT Community Outreach - A shelter and a warming centre for homeless young people

- Eastside Family Centre - Offers counselling service at no cost and a Community Resource Team that provides 24/7 telephone assistance and mobile crisis response

- Stabilization - A program that provides a short (up to 30 days) timeout for families who are experiencing great difficulties or a crisis

- Foster Care - Providing homes for youth who require short- or long-term suport in a home-based environment

- Youth in Transition - Helping troubled young people transition into the Adult Service System.

- Home Connections - Providing support to children and families in home, school and community settings.

Wood’s Homes has a good relationship with many other agencies in southern Alberta to ensure the best treatment possible for the 460 young people and their families we help every day.

The following definitions are also what makes Wood's Homes unique.

OUR CORE VALUES are:

Commitment - An unwavering persistence in situations most difficult and guided by a call to service and expectations of excellence.

Respect - An appreciation of differences and a belief in the inherent good of each and every individual.

Belonging - Acceptance and encouragement of the very basic human need to be connected with others and the  development of a collective and inclusive organizational culture.

Responsibility - Combining the courage to be accountable with the power of vulnerability and forgiveness.
